Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease affecting some 400,000 people in the U.S. Multiple sclerosis is where the body's immune system accidentally starts attacking healthy tissue and organs. Nobody wants to hear this dreaded diagnosis, so here are just a few steps that may help prevent multiple sclerosis from happening to you.
One study found that a daily dose of caffeine equal to 6-8 cups of coffee may have prevented a condition similar to multiple sclerosis in mice. The caffeine helped prevent the adenosine and adenosine receptor from binding and helping the harmful T-cells from reaching the central nervous system. Other research found that a daily dose of Vitamin D at 400 international units made those who took this dose to be 40 percent less likely to develop MS. A favorite form of Vitamin D is sunshine, and in a study conducted in the sunshine state of California, it was found that out of the entire group that was studied, the people that spent the most time in the sun were up to 49 percent less likely to contract multiple sclerosis than those that did not. This is said to be due in part to the fact that the sun's rays produce vitamin D.
There was also a link found between declined estrogen levels and changes in the immune function. With proper diet, vitamins, and a little sunshine, you may be able to lessen your risk for multiple sclerosis and keep yourself healthy. Here's to your good health.
